Music & Musicology Department

The Department of Music & Musicology is committed to cultivating a profound appreciation and comprehension of music within Omani society. Our mission is anchored in both scholarly excellence and community involvement, with an aspiration to nurture musical and artistic consciousness that influences cultural identity and propels societal advancement. Music, as a fundamental element of human expression, transcends mere emotional engagement; it fosters cognitive development, enhances aesthetic discernment, and significantly contributes to character formation.

Our academic function is crucial in promoting musicological research and education, addressing deficiencies in ethnomusicology and affiliated disciplines. By prioritizing a rigorous and interdisciplinary methodology in musical studies, we strive to explore, document, and safeguard the rich musical legacy of Oman and the wider Arab region, while facilitating dialogue with global musical traditions. This dedication is evident in our curriculum, which harmonizes traditional Arab music with the comprehensive study of Western music, enabling students to attain a broad and diverse musical fluency. Our objective is to cultivate "musical bilingualism," equipping graduates with the capability to navigate and contribute to a multicultural musical environment.

In addition to our academic pursuits, the Department assumes a critical role in community service, applying scholarly expertise for societal benefit. Through workshops, performances, cultural initiatives, and collaborative projects, we extend our knowledge beyond the classroom to inspire and engage the wider public. This outreach serves to bridge the divide between theoretical education and practical implementation, fostering a dynamic exchange that enriches both our students and the community.
The Department also underscores the significance of diversity and collaboration in music education. Our faculty, composed of specialists from various musical traditions—including Eastern, Western, Arab, and European—ensures a comprehensive and inclusive educational experience. This multicultural perspective arises from our conviction that music is a universal language, and that Arab music, in particular, gains depth and vitality through engagement with other musical traditions. By fostering this ethos of openness and cross-cultural interaction, we prepare our students to become influential musicians, researchers, and cultural ambassadors.

Through these initiatives, we remain unwavering in our commitment to shaping a generation of adept musicians and informed citizens, who harmoniously integrate artistic creativity with academic rigor, and who make meaningful contributions to the cultural fabric of Oman and beyond.
